Lightly grease a deep 10cm square cake pan, line base with paper.
Place water and dates in pan & bring to boil. Remove from heat add bicarb soda & mix well cool slightly.
Beat butter sugar and vanilla until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time beating well after each addition.
Fold in sifted flour. Pour date mixture into flour mixture, mix well. Pour into cake pan. Bake in moderate
oven about 45 mins - till cooked. Combine cream & sugar in pan, stir over low heat
(dont boil) until sugar dissolves. Remove from heat, stir in butter until smooth. Serve hot with cream or and
ice-cream.
